CSKA Moscow vs Manchester United preview
UEFA Champions League, Group A
CSKA Moscow vs Manchester United
Venue: VEB Arena, Moscow
Time: 19:45 BST
Manchester United will look to take control of Group A when they travel to Russia to take on CSKA Moscow on Wednesday. Both these sides won on the opening match day.
United coasted to a 3-0 victory to Basel at Old Trafford, while Moscow were mightily impressive in a 2-1 away win over Benfica. It would be safe to say that whoever wins in the Russian capital on Wednesday will take a big step to not only qualifying, but also winning the group.
United are unbeaten in recent history against CSKA, winning two and drawing two of their last four meetings.
CSKA Moscow manager Viktor Goncharenko has a full squad to choose from, with no injuries and suspensions. Jose Mourinho stated in his pre-match conference that this is the best CSKA side he has faced in his career.
“Am I happy to return to Russia? I’ve been here with Real Madrid, Chelsea, Inter, Man United last season … I am happy, yes. It’s good to be back in Russia.
“Moscow is getting better and better every year. As for CSKA, it’s the best CSKA I’ve played so far.”
Mourinho is without his long-term injury absentees Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Marcos Rojo. Eric Bailly will come back into the side after missing the win over Basel through suspension.
Manchester United haven’t been in the Champions League in a year, but are winless in their last 5 games on the road, losing 4 and drawing 1.
Mourinho will want to take a stranglehold on the group as early as possible, so he can take the pressure off the team in the last couple of weeks. This is especially important considering how competitive the Premier League has been this season, and United will not want to let up on neighbours City at the top. It won’t be easy, but the Red Devils have enough firepower to get past this CSKA side.
